What is Vinyl Flooring?

Guitar-On-Vinyl-FloorVinyl flooring is an incredibly beautiful product that has incredible resilient properties. Do you ever wonder how such a durable and long lasting floor is made? Well, today we will be answering that question in our blog.

Vinyl flooring is made of multiple layers of materials starting with a core of vinyl that has been adhered to a felt or fiberglass backing. Gorgeous designs are then printed on a layer that sits on the core. This top layer is what gives each vinyl flooring a unique look, separating it from any other vinyl on the market. The amazing thing about the top layer is the fact that it can be made to look like anything that one can imagine. Whether it be hardwood, ceramic tile, or even a picture of the Mona Lisa, you can achieve almost any design.

After the visible layer is done, the vinyl flooring is then given the final layer. This is called the wear layer. It is made of vinyl as well but it is what will protect your floors from scratching and wear.

The Wear Layer

The top layer or wear layer of vinyl is about 10 mm thick. If this is hard to grasp imagine a strand of human hair, the thickness of this strand is about 1 mm thick. Seems pretty tiny, doesn’t it? Well have you ever heard the expression “a little bit, goes a long way.” This is so true in the case of vinyl flooring! However the thicker the wear layer, the more resilient the flooring is obviously.

Vinyl-FloorThe floor covering industry has made massive improvements to the properties of the wear layers since vinyl’s induction into floor covering. They have experimented with many different properties to improve the resilience of the floor itself, and now the product that you see to day are more tough and resistant than ever before, and also more stunning to look at.

Here are some advantages of having vinyl flooring in your home:

  • Very tough flooring
  • Resistant to Scratching, Denting, and Tearing
  • Clean up and maintenance is a breeze!
  • Because it is impermeable to liquids, staining it will take a lot.
  • It is easy to install, and in most cases DIY installation is recommended.
  • This is one of the most affordable modern flooring options available today.

The only time I would probably discourage someone from getting vinyl flooring would be if they lived in a sandy area such as a beach or lake. This is because one of the most common dulling issues with vinyl flooring are cause by sand and grit micro scratches. This is not to say you will notice right away, it is just an over time wear issue. But to be honest if that is the least of your problems then your still getting an amazing floor covering with the potential to last for years to come.
