What does Laminate Flooring Thickness Mean?

Laminate Flooring ThicknessLaminate flooring thickness is a stat we see on a box when we go to a flooring store or browse online. Have you ever asked yourself what it means to the flooring? Today we will be going over what the thickness of laminate flooring means to you.

Manufacturers almost always state the thickness of their products. If you cannot find the actual number, a helpful sales person will have access to it. Because laminates are a bit thinner than traditional hardwood, it will be in millimeters.1 mm translates to about .039 of an inch to put things into perspective. So we are talking tiny numbers.

Laminate flooring thickness is measured from the bottom surface that sits on the floor to the top of the plank. This being said, if the laminate flooring has padding pre-attached to it, such as a cushion backed laminate manufacturers tend to count that into the thickness of the actual plank. This can be confusing to some when they actually break out the measuring tool.

Laminate Flooring ThicknessWill a thicker floor increase the durability of the laminate?

Not always! Most of the durability associated with laminate flooring comes from the of the wear layer. The wear layer is the top layer of the flooring that you see once installed. The durability of the product depends on the specific treatment or finish applied to the surface, such as aluminum oxide.

Impact resistance however has a direct correlation to the thickness of the laminate. The thicker it is, the more resistance to damage from the impact of a falling product. In this particular case the thickness will help you tremendously.

This is all great but what are the advantages of a thicker laminate floor?

Laminate Flooring ThicknessOur take on Laminate Flooring Thickness:

Overall, thicker floors make for a better floor. Added sound reduction is a key factor in really enjoying your laminate flooring. I mean have you ever been to someone’s house and actually noticed the noise from walking across the room. It can be Loud! Especially if they have a few little ones running around upstairs.

Other than the advantages I listed there really aren’t many more perks where laminate is concerned. A word of advice though, if you concentrate on the other specifications of your flooring, rather than thickness you will get more out of your search.

I hope this article shared some light on this, sometimes confusing subject, and I would love to hear your take on it so feel free to leave a comment!
